How to Migrate From dYdX v3 to v4

Risk warning. Trading perpetual futures and other leveraged crypto-asset products is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money, so never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. Disclaimer

If you’re looking for how to migrate from dYdX v3 to v4, there’s nothing left to actually do, v3 stopped trading entirely on October 28, 2024, and the migration to v4 has been complete since early 2026.

This guide is part of TradeOnDEX’s dYdX how-to series within Perpetual Futures. Everything else in this series covers v4, the platform’s current and only active version.

What actually happened when v3 shut down

Trading, oracle price updates, and funding payments on v3 all ceased on October 28, 2024, at 12:05 PM UTC. Critically, user accounts and funds remained held securely within v3’s Ethereum smart contract system specifically so that users could withdraw their own USDC without depending on dYdX Trading Inc. or any other third party, a deliberate design choice to preserve user access to funds even after the platform itself stopped operating.

dYdX has stated it intends to keep read-only historical data accessible via API for at least one year after the shutdown date, for anyone who needs to reference past v3 activity.

Why v3 and v4 are architecturally different, not just versioned

v3 ran as a layer on Ethereum; v4 runs on its own standalone Cosmos-based blockchain, dYdX Chain, with every component, from the order book to the front end, fully decentralized. This is a materially different architecture, not an incremental update, which is why “migrating” involved bridging tokens from Ethereum to the new chain entirely rather than a simple account carryover.

If you still hold unclaimed v3 funds

  1. Check whether you have any remaining balance in v3’s smart contract system, funds were preserved there specifically for independent withdrawal.
  2. Use the withdrawal path v3’s contracts still support for any remaining balance, since the underlying smart contracts continue to allow this even though active trading has stopped.
  3. Once withdrawn, follow this series’ account setup and deposit guides to bring that capital onto v4 if you want to continue trading on dYdX.
  4. If you need historical v3 trade data (for tax records, as covered in the tax export guide, for example), check whether dYdX’s read-only historical API access window is still available.

Risk: what to actually watch for at this stage

Any “v3 migration tool” or third-party service you encounter now deserves real scrutiny. Since v3 has been shut down for an extended period, any service still actively promoting a “migration” process should be checked carefully against dYdX’s own official communications, legitimate remaining v3 activity is limited to withdrawing preserved funds, not an ongoing migration workflow.

The read-only historical data API window has a stated minimum duration, not an unlimited one. If you need old v3 records for tax or personal purposes, check current availability directly rather than assuming indefinite access, since dYdX committed to at least one year, not a permanent guarantee.

v3 and v4 are different platforms with different account models, so don’t expect an automatic carryover. As covered in the account setup guide, v4 uses a Cosmos-based wallet architecture entirely distinct from v3’s Ethereum L2 account model, there’s no single-click continuity between the two.

If you haven’t touched a v3 account in a long time, verify fund safety directly through official channels before trusting any unfamiliar recovery process. Given how much time has passed since the shutdown, be specifically wary of scams targeting people trying to recover old, forgotten v3 balances.

See it for yourself

If you believe you still have funds in dYdX v3, check dYdX’s own official channels directly for the current withdrawal process rather than searching generically for “v3 migration,” since the situation is a fund-recovery scenario at this point, not an active migration decision. You can review current account access at dydx.trade.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still trade on dYdX v3?

No, v3 trading, oracle updates, and funding payments all stopped on October 28, 2024; v4 is the only active trading platform now.

Are my v3 funds lost if I never migrated them?

Not necessarily, v3’s smart contracts were specifically designed to preserve independent withdrawal access even after trading stopped; check the official withdrawal path for any remaining balance.

Is there still an active migration process to follow?

No, the migration to v4 has been complete since early 2026; any “migration” activity you’d need now is really just withdrawing preserved v3 funds, not an ongoing platform transition.

Can I still access my old v3 trade history?

Possibly, through dYdX’s committed read-only historical API access, though this was stated as available for a minimum period rather than indefinitely. Check current availability directly.

Risk warning

Trading crypto assets, and leveraged products based on them such as perpetual futures ("perps"), is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money on these products. Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike and can push your loss beyond the amount you put in. Positions can be closed automatically (liquidation) before you get a chance to react, and some of the platforms we cover offer no negative balance protection.

Never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. TradeOnDEX gives no investment advice, no personal recommendation, and no guarantee of any outcome. Every decision you make is your own decision and your own responsibility.
