How to Create a dYdX Account and Connect a Wallet

Risk warning. Trading perpetual futures and other leveraged crypto-asset products is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money, so never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. Disclaimer

Connecting a wallet to dYdX doesn’t just link an existing address, it generates a separate dYdX Chain wallet derived from your original wallet’s private key, since dYdX v4 runs on its own purpose-built blockchain rather than as a layer on Ethereum.

This guide is the first in TradeOnDEX’s dYdX how-to series within Perpetual Futures.

Why dYdX’s setup looks different from an Ethereum-based DEX

dYdX v4 moved off Ethereum layer-2 infrastructure entirely and onto its own Cosmos-based blockchain, dYdX Chain. This means for you, concretely: connecting a standard wallet like MetaMask doesn’t put you directly onto dYdX Chain, instead, the connection process generates a dYdX Chain-specific wallet tied to your original wallet’s signature, and that’s the address you actually trade from.

How to connect, step by step

  1. Click Connect Wallet in the top right corner of the dYdX interface.
  2. Choose from the supported wallets: MetaMask, Phantom, Keplr, WalletConnect, Coinbase Wallet, or use social login via Privy if you don’t already have a wallet set up.
  3. On first connection, you’ll see a Sign Message prompt requiring two signature requests, this generates your dYdX Chain wallet based on your original wallet’s private key.
  4. Once connected, a dYdX v4 address is generated automatically, and you’re ready to deposit funds.

No traditional KYC, but a signature step that matters

There’s no traditional identity-verification step to open an account, access is entirely wallet-authentication-based. This means for you, concretely: the signature requests during setup aren’t a formality to click through quickly, they’re the actual mechanism creating your trading identity on dYdX Chain, so understand what you’re signing rather than treating it as routine.

Risk: what’s different about a Cosmos-based DEX wallet setup

Your dYdX Chain wallet is derived from your original wallet’s signature, which means your original wallet’s security is now doubly important. If your MetaMask or other connected wallet’s private key or seed phrase is compromised, both the original wallet and the derived dYdX Chain wallet are affected, protect the source wallet with the same care regardless of which chain you’re ultimately trading on.

Social login via Privy trades some self-custody characteristics for convenience. Setting up a wallet through email or social login lowers the barrier to entry, but understand what custody model that specific option uses before depositing significant funds, it may not behave identically to connecting a wallet you already fully control.

dYdX has a documented history of a targeted insurance-fund attack on its earlier v3 platform. In November 2023, a coordinated attack exploiting thin liquidity in a specific market drained roughly $9 million from dYdX v3’s insurance fund, user funds themselves weren’t affected, and this occurred on the now-retired v3 architecture, but it’s worth knowing as context for how seriously to take market-specific liquidity risk on any version of the platform.

Not every supported wallet behaves identically across every feature. Before relying on a specific wallet for advanced functionality later in this series (sub-accounts, API trading, or governance participation), confirm that wallet’s current compatibility rather than assuming full feature parity across all supported options.

Connect a wallet you already understand the security model of before depositing meaningful funds, and read the signature requests during setup rather than clicking through them automatically. You can start the connection process at dydx.trade.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to complete identity verification to use dYdX?

No, access is based entirely on wallet authentication, with no traditional KYC step required to connect and start trading.

Why do I need to sign two messages when connecting for the first time?

The signature requests generate your dYdX Chain wallet, derived from your original wallet’s private key, this is the mechanism that creates your actual trading address on dYdX Chain, not just a login formality.

Can I use dYdX without an existing crypto wallet?

Yes, social login via Privy lets you set up a wallet using an email or social account, though it’s worth understanding that this has different custody characteristics than connecting a wallet you already fully control.

Is the November 2023 insurance fund incident still a risk today?

That specific attack targeted dYdX’s earlier v3 platform and a particular market’s thin liquidity; it’s relevant mainly as context for why market-specific liquidity conditions matter, not a currently active vulnerability in v4.

Risk warning

Trading crypto assets, and leveraged products based on them such as perpetual futures ("perps"), is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money on these products. Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike and can push your loss beyond the amount you put in. Positions can be closed automatically (liquidation) before you get a chance to react, and some of the platforms we cover offer no negative balance protection.

Never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. TradeOnDEX gives no investment advice, no personal recommendation, and no guarantee of any outcome. Every decision you make is your own decision and your own responsibility.
