Bridge contract

A smart contract that locks or receives assets on one chain and credits an equivalent balance on another chain or application layer. It is the entry and exit point for moving funds onto a venue that runs on its own network.

Definition

A bridge contract is what makes a balance on one network usable on another. Assets are deposited into the contract on the source chain, and a corresponding balance appears on the destination. Nothing physically moves: the contract on one side holds, and the system on the other side credits.

Why it matters when depositing to a DEX

Exchanges that run on their own chain or their own application layer cannot receive funds directly from elsewhere. The bridge is the only door, and its rules are strict.

Which token it accepts, on which network, is not negotiable. Sending the wrong variant of a token, native versus bridged, or sending the right token on the wrong network, generally means the deposit is not credited. Bridge contracts are not designed to recognise a mistake and reverse it.

The specific risks

Bridges concentrate value, which makes them a recurring target: a large share of the biggest losses in crypto have been bridge exploits rather than exchange failures. Using one is a decision to trust that contract and the validator set behind it, for as long as your funds are on the other side.

There is also finality. A deposit is usually fast and a withdrawal usually is not, because a dispute or challenge window sits between the request and the release. That delay is a safety feature, and it is also a period during which you cannot access your funds.

What to check before sending

The exact contract address, taken from the exchange’s own interface rather than a search result or a link someone sent you, and a small test transfer before a large one. Both are cheap relative to what they protect against.

Where you will run into it

At the deposit and withdraw steps of exchanges built on their own chain, and behind any cross-chain transfer between networks that do not settle to one another directly.
