How to Trade Spot Assets on Hyperliquid
Risk warning. Trading perpetual futures and other leveraged crypto-asset products is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money, so never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. Disclaimer
Hyperliquid’s spot market works like any token exchange, buy and sell at the current price, no leverage, with one important difference: anyone can list a token permissionlessly, and it becomes instantly tradable.
This guide is part of TradeOnDEX’s Hyperliquid how-to series within Perpetual Futures.

How is spot trading different from the perpetuals you’ve read about elsewhere in this series?
Spot trading means buying or selling the actual asset, with no leverage and no liquidation risk. If you buy 1 HYPE on the spot market, you own 1 HYPE, there’s no borrowed exposure, and nothing forces your position closed if the price moves against you.
This means for you, concretely: spot trading carries market risk (the asset’s price can fall), but not the leverage-specific risks, like liquidation, that apply to the perpetual positions covered elsewhere in this series.
How to place a spot trade, step by step
- Fund your account with USDC (see the deposit guide if needed).
- Select the Spot tab and choose your trading pair.
- Choose Market for immediate execution at the best available price, or Limit to set your own price.
- Enter the amount you want to buy or sell.
- Confirm the order.
Limit orders on spot, like on perpetuals, typically pay a lower fee than market orders since they add liquidity rather than take it.
What “permissionless listing” actually means
Any token following Hyperliquid’s HIP-1 standard can be deployed directly on-chain, without approval from Hyperliquid itself, and becomes tradable immediately. New tickers are assigned through a Dutch auction process, not a listings committee.
This is genuinely useful for legitimate new projects, who can get liquid trading without negotiating a centralized listing process. It’s also a lower barrier for scam tokens, since “listed on Hyperliquid” implies nothing about a project’s legitimacy, audit status, or team.
Risk: what spot trading on a permissionless venue actually exposes you to
“Tradable” does not mean “vetted.” Because listing requires no approval, a token being available on Hyperliquid’s spot market says nothing about whether it has real utility, an audited contract, or an identifiable team behind it. Treat every new or unfamiliar spot listing with the same scrutiny you’d apply to a random token on any permissionless AMM.
Thin liquidity on newer or smaller tokens can mean large slippage, even without leverage. A spot trade with no leverage still executes against the order book, a large order in a thin market can move the price against you meaningfully, the same dynamic covered in reading the order book.
Removing leverage removes liquidation risk, not market risk. A spot position can still lose most or all of its value if the underlying asset collapses, the absence of a liquidation mechanism doesn’t mean the absence of downside.
Established, well-known assets (major L1/L2 tokens, blue-chip stablecoins) carry a fundamentally different risk profile than a newly deployed, low-liquidity ticker. Lumping “spot trading” together as one risk level obscures a wide range, do your own research on a specific token’s fundamentals before treating a listing itself as a signal of quality.
Spot vs. perpetual trading: a quick comparison
| Spot | Perpetual | |
|---|---|---|
| Leverage | None | Up to the market’s maximum, tiered by size |
| Liquidation risk | None | Yes, if equity falls below maintenance margin |
| What you own | The actual asset | A derivative position tracking its price |
| Listing barrier | Permissionless (HIP-1) | Requires the market to exist on Hyperliquid’s perp venue |
See it for yourself
Before trading an unfamiliar spot asset, check its liquidity depth and research the project independently, a listing on Hyperliquid is not, by itself, a signal of legitimacy. You can browse live spot markets at app.hyperliquid.xyz.
Frequently asked questions
Does spot trading on Hyperliquid carry liquidation risk?
No. Spot positions use no leverage, so there’s no maintenance margin or liquidation mechanism, but the asset’s price can still fall, and you can still lose money.
Does a token being listed on Hyperliquid mean it’s been vetted?
No. Listing is permissionless under the HIP-1 standard; anyone can deploy a token and have it become tradable without Hyperliquid’s approval.
Are trading fees different for spot vs. perpetuals?
Fee structures are broadly similar (maker/taker based), though it’s worth checking current fee schedules for any asset-specific differences before trading at size.
Is spot trading a lower-risk way to get exposure to a token than a perpetual position?
It removes leverage-specific risks like liquidation, but you can still lose your full investment if the asset’s price collapses, it’s lower-risk relative to a leveraged position, not risk-free.

Risk warning
Trading crypto assets, and leveraged products based on them such as perpetual futures ("perps"), is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money on these products. Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike and can push your loss beyond the amount you put in. Positions can be closed automatically (liquidation) before you get a chance to react, and some of the platforms we cover offer no negative balance protection.
