How to Stake HYPE Tokens for Fee Discounts
Risk warning. Trading perpetual futures and other leveraged crypto-asset products is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money, so never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. Disclaimer
Staking HYPE doesn’t just earn a yield, it unlocks a separate, stacking discount on every trading fee you pay, up to 40% off, on top of your existing volume-based tier.
This guide is part of TradeOnDEX’s Hyperliquid how-to series within Perpetual Futures.

How does staking actually reduce your fees?
Hyperliquid runs six staking tiers, from “Wood” (10 HYPE minimum, 5% fee discount) up to the top tier (500,000+ HYPE, 40% discount). The discount applies multiplicatively on top of your volume-based fee tier, not instead of it.
This means for you, concretely: a trader on the entry volume tier paying a 0.045% taker fee, staking enough HYPE for the 40% discount, pays an effective 0.027% taker fee instead. At high trading volume, the two discounts combined can push effective taker fees into the 0.014%-0.018% range.
How to stake HYPE, step by step
- Make sure you have a funded Hyperliquid account (see the deposit guide if you haven’t already).
- Go to the spot trading page and buy HYPE using your USDC balance.
- Navigate to app.hyperliquid.xyz/staking.
- Choose a validator to delegate to, this choice matters, see the risk section below.
- Enter the amount of HYPE you want to stake and confirm.
- Your fee discount applies immediately once the stake is active; there’s no separate claim step.
Understanding the unstaking timeline
Unstaking isn’t instant, and it happens in two stages: first, delegations to a specific validator have a 1-day lockup before you can undelegate from that validator. Second, moving HYPE from your staking account back to your spot balance (where it’s freely tradeable or withdrawable) goes through a 7-day unstaking queue.
This means for you, concretely: if you need that capital liquid again, plan for roughly a week’s notice, not an instant unstake.
Risk: what staking HYPE actually exposes you to
Your fee discount is directly tied to a specific validator’s performance, not just your own stake. If the validator you delegate to gets jailed, voted out of consensus participation by peers for poor uptime or responsiveness, you stop earning staking rewards for as long as it’s jailed, even though your capital is still locked.
Slashing risk exists in principle, even though it isn’t automatically enforced today. Jailing (a temporary suspension for poor performance) is different from slashing (a punitive stake loss reserved for provably malicious behavior like double-signing blocks). Hyperliquid’s documentation notes no automatic slashing is currently implemented, but “not currently automatic” is a description of the present state, not a permanent guarantee, and it’s worth re-checking current documentation before assuming this never changes.
A 7-day unstaking queue means your HYPE is genuinely illiquid for that window. If HYPE’s price moves sharply while your stake is in the unbonding process, you can’t react by selling until the queue clears, this is a real opportunity cost, not just a formality.
Concentrating your entire stake with one validator concentrates your risk with it. Diversifying a larger stake across multiple validators reduces the impact of any single validator’s downtime or jailing on your overall rewards and fee discount continuity.
A fee discount is a real, recurring saving, but it shouldn’t drive position sizing. The percentage-point difference on trading fees is meaningful over high volume, but it’s small relative to the risk of a single leveraged position moving against you. Don’t let a fee discount justify taking on more size or leverage than you’d otherwise choose.
Staking tiers at a glance
| Tier | Approx. HYPE required | Fee discount |
|---|---|---|
| Wood (entry) | 10 HYPE | 5% |
| Mid tiers | Scales upward | Scales upward |
| Platinum / Diamond (top) | 100,000-500,000+ HYPE | Up to 40% |
Exact tier thresholds are a platform parameter that can be adjusted. Verify current tiers on the staking page before assuming a specific number qualifies you for a specific discount.
See it for yourself
If you’re new to staking, consider starting with a smaller amount to get comfortable with validator selection and the unstaking timeline before committing a larger position you might need liquid on short notice. You can review current tiers and validators at app.hyperliquid.xyz/staking.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly can I get my HYPE back after unstaking?
Undelegating from a validator requires a 1-day lockup, and moving funds from your staking account to your spot balance goes through a separate 7-day unstaking queue.
Does the fee discount replace my volume-based fee tier?
No, it stacks multiplicatively with your existing volume tier rather than replacing it.
Can I lose my staked HYPE if my validator misbehaves?
There is no automatic slashing implemented currently, but jailing (loss of rewards, not stake) can happen for poor validator performance, and the possibility of future slashing rules shouldn’t be ruled out. Check current documentation before relying on this.
Should I put all my HYPE with one validator?
Diversifying across multiple validators reduces the impact of any single validator being jailed or underperforming on your overall rewards.

Risk warning
Trading crypto assets, and leveraged products based on them such as perpetual futures ("perps"), is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money on these products. Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike and can push your loss beyond the amount you put in. Positions can be closed automatically (liquidation) before you get a chance to react, and some of the platforms we cover offer no negative balance protection.
