How to Create a Hyperliquid Account and Connect Your Wallet

Risk warning. Trading perpetual futures and other leveraged crypto-asset products is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money, so never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. Disclaimer

There’s no sign-up form on Hyperliquid. You don’t create a username or password, you connect a self-custody wallet, and that wallet is your account.

This is the first guide in TradeOnDEX’s Hyperliquid how-to series within Perpetual Futures, covering the platform end to end, from wallet setup through your first trade.

What does that actually mean for you?

On a centralized exchange, the exchange holds your funds and your identity behind a login. On Hyperliquid, you hold both yourself, through a wallet only you control.

This means for you, concretely: no ID upload, no email verification, no waiting period to get approved. It also means there’s no “forgot password” button, if you lose your wallet’s seed phrase, nobody can recover it for you, not even Hyperliquid.

That trade-off, more control paired with more personal responsibility, is the core mechanic of every self-custody DEX, not just Hyperliquid.

What do you need before you start?

Two things: a self-custody wallet (this guide uses MetaMask, the most widely supported option), and the Arbitrum One network added to it. Hyperliquid’s trading engine runs on its own chain, but deposits and withdrawals move through Arbitrum, so your wallet needs to speak that network.

You don’t need any funds yet for this step. Connecting a wallet and depositing money are two separate actions, this guide only covers connecting.

How to set up a wallet, step by step

  1. Install a wallet. Go to metamask.io directly (not a search-ad link) and install the official browser extension.
  2. Create the wallet and write down the seed phrase. MetaMask shows a 12-word phrase once. Write it on paper, not a screenshot or note app, and store it somewhere offline.
  3. Add the Arbitrum One network. MetaMask includes it by default in recent versions; if it’s missing, add it through chainlist.org rather than typing RPC details from an unverified source.
  4. Go to app.hyperliquid.xyz directly, typed into the address bar or from a bookmark you made yourself, not a link from a social post or DM.
  5. Click “Connect Wallet” in the top right, select MetaMask, and approve the connection.
  6. Sign the authentication message. This is a free, off-chain signature that proves wallet ownership. It does not move any funds and costs no gas.

At this point your wallet is connected, but your balance on Hyperliquid is zero. Depositing USDC is a separate, deliberate step, see the guide to depositing USDC via the Arbitrum bridge.

Risk: what can actually go wrong here

Seed phrase exposure is the single biggest risk in this step, and it has nothing to do with Hyperliquid specifically. Anyone who obtains your seed phrase controls your wallet completely, on every chain, permanently. No legitimate app, wallet, or support agent will ever ask you to type it into a website or share it in a message.

Fake Hyperliquid sites are a real, documented problem. Because there’s no login wall, phishing clones that mimic the real interface are a common scam vector across DEXs generally. Always navigate to app.hyperliquid.xyz by typing it yourself or using your own bookmark.

Wallet connection itself carries smart contract risk once you go further than this step. Approving a wallet connection is low-risk (it’s a signature, not a transaction), but every later approval you grant, deposits included, is worth reading before confirming. Hyperliquid’s bridge contracts have had a third-party audit (Zellic), but audits reduce risk rather than eliminate it, and the audit’s own scope did not extend to the core Layer-1 protocol.

This isn’t fully clear-cut: “audited” is not the same as “risk-free,” and it’s worth treating every crypto smart contract, audited or not, as carrying some residual risk.

Wallet-based login vs. exchange sign-up: an honest comparison

Centralized exchangeHyperliquid (self-custody)
Setup timeOften 1-3 days (KYC review)Minutes
Who holds your fundsThe exchangeYou, via your wallet
Recovery if you lose accessExchange supportNobody, seed phrase is the only backup
Identity requiredUsually yesNo

Neither model is objectively “better”, it depends on whether you value custody or convenience more, and how comfortable you are being your own security layer.

See it for yourself

The best way to understand this is to try the connection flow yourself: visit the platform, connect a wallet, and look around before depositing anything. You can explore Hyperliquid’s app directly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to complete KYC to use Hyperliquid?

No identity verification is required to connect a wallet and view the trading interface. Note that some jurisdictions restrict access to derivatives platforms regardless of the platform’s own KYC policy. Check your local rules.

Which wallets does Hyperliquid support besides MetaMask?

Other Arbitrum-compatible wallets, such as Rabby, work the same way. Hyperliquid also offers an email-based login option for users who prefer not to manage a seed phrase directly, though this changes the custody model.

Is connecting my wallet the same as depositing funds?

No. Connecting only proves wallet ownership via a free signature. Depositing USDC is a separate step covered in the next guide in this series.

What happens if I lose my seed phrase after connecting?

You lose access to that wallet permanently, on every chain it holds assets on, not just Hyperliquid. This is why storing it offline and securely, before you do anything else, matters more than any other step here.

Risk warning

Trading crypto assets, and leveraged products based on them such as perpetual futures ("perps"), is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money on these products. Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike and can push your loss beyond the amount you put in. Positions can be closed automatically (liquidation) before you get a chance to react, and some of the platforms we cover offer no negative balance protection.

Never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. TradeOnDEX gives no investment advice, no personal recommendation, and no guarantee of any outcome. Every decision you make is your own decision and your own responsibility.
