How to Understand and Track Multiplier Points on GMX

Risk warning. Trading perpetual futures and other leveraged crypto-asset products is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money, so never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. Disclaimer

Multiplier Points reward you for staying staked, not for staking more, and they’re designed with a real cost to leaving: unstaking burns them permanently, in proportion to what you withdraw.

This guide closes out this stretch of TradeOnDEX’s GMX how-to series within Perpetual Futures, building on staking GMX and vesting esGMX.

How Multiplier Points accrue

Multiplier Points (MP) accrue continuously at a fixed rate, effectively 100% APR relative to your staked GMX and esGMX balance. This means for you, concretely: the longer you stay staked without unstaking, the larger your MP balance grows relative to your principal, purely as a function of time, not additional deposits.

How Multiplier Points actually boost your rewards

MPs themselves can be staked, earning the same ETH/AVAX fee rewards as staked GMX. Their real effect, though, is the boost percentage: if your MP balance equals 20% of your combined GMX and esGMX balance, your fee-reward rate gets an extra 20% boost, annualized. As your MP balance grows relative to your principal over time, so does your boost, a compounding effect that rewards patience.

Following a governance decision (effective February 2024), the maximum boost from Multiplier Points is capped at 200%, preventing it from growing indefinitely for very long-term stakers.

Risk: the trade-off Multiplier Points are specifically designed to create

Unstaking burns Multiplier Points proportionally, permanently. This is the mechanic’s whole point: it’s designed to reward staying staked and penalize withdrawing. If you unstake even part of your GMX or esGMX, you lose a proportional share of your accumulated MPs, not just future accrual, already-earned boost disappears.

This creates a real incentive to avoid unstaking, even when your circumstances might otherwise call for it. A large accumulated MP balance can make unstaking feel costly beyond the simple opportunity cost of lost future rewards, since you’re forfeiting boost you’ve already built up. Recognize this as an intentional retention mechanic, not a neutral feature, when deciding whether to stake in the first place.

The reward rate itself has been a subject of genuine governance debate, not a fixed, uncontested parameter. GMX’s own governance forum has hosted extended community discussion about reducing the Multiplier Points APR, with the 200% boost cap itself being a product of that debate. Treat the current mechanics as a snapshot of an evolving system, not a permanent guarantee, a future governance vote could change the accrual rate or cap further.

Compounding-driven rewards can create pressure to never unstake, which isn’t always the financially sound choice. The mechanic rewards patience, but “the system incentivizes me to stay staked” and “staying staked is my best decision right now” aren’t automatically the same thing, evaluate your own situation independent of the sunk-cost pull of accumulated MPs.

Track your current boost percentage on the Earn page before deciding whether to unstake any GMX, understanding exactly how much accumulated MP you’d forfeit makes it a more deliberate decision rather than an automatic hesitation. You can review your current staking position at gmx.io.

Frequently asked questions

Do Multiplier Points have their own market value or token?

No, they’re an internal accounting mechanic that boosts your fee-reward rate; they aren’t a separately tradeable token.

What happens to my Multiplier Points if I unstake some of my GMX?

A proportional share is burned permanently, not paused, forfeited entirely for that portion.

Is there a maximum boost Multiplier Points can provide?

Yes, capped at 200% following a February 2024 governance decision.

Could GMX change the Multiplier Points reward rate in the future?

Yes, it’s already been the subject of active governance debate, so treat the current rate as subject to change via future community votes, not a fixed permanent parameter.
