How to Withdraw From MegaVault

Risk warning. Trading perpetual futures and other leveraged crypto-asset products is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money, so never trade with money you cannot afford to lose entirely. Disclaimer

MegaVault has no lockup period, but “instant” doesn’t mean “at a fixed price”, your withdrawal is processed pro-rata across every underlying sub-vault, and the amount you actually receive can be affected by slippage depending on conditions at the moment you withdraw.

This guide is part of TradeOnDEX’s dYdX how-to series within Perpetual Futures, building directly on the MegaVault deposit and yield-sources guide.

What a MegaVault share actually represents

Your MegaVault position is tracked as a share of the vault as a whole, these shares are non-transferable and simply represent your proportional stake, not a separate tradable asset. MegaVault tracks what proportion of the total vault each depositor holds, and this proportion is what a withdrawal calculation is based on.

How withdrawal is actually processed

When you request a withdrawal, it’s applied pro-rata across the underlying sub-vaults rather than pulled from one specific market. This means for you, concretely: your withdrawal draws proportionally from every sub-vault MegaVault currently allocates to, not just the ones that happen to be performing best at that moment, you can’t selectively withdraw from only your strongest-performing sub-vault exposure.

How to withdraw, step by step

  1. Navigate to your MegaVault position in the dYdX interface.
  2. Request a withdrawal for the amount of USDC you want back, there’s no minimum holding period to satisfy first.
  3. The vault processes your withdrawal pro-rata across its current sub-vault allocations.
  4. Receive your USDC, typically without a formal cooldown, though the amount can be affected by slippage tied to current market and vault conditions.

Risk: what “instant” withdrawal doesn’t guarantee

Slippage on withdrawal is a real possibility, not a hypothetical edge case. Because your withdrawal is processed against current vault conditions and pro-rata across sub-vaults, the exact USDC amount you receive can differ from a simple pre-calculated figure, particularly during volatile market conditions or unusual vault positioning.

“No lockup” describes the current version of MegaVault, not a permanent guarantee. dYdX itself has noted that future iterations of MegaVault could introduce lockup periods or other withdrawal restrictions in certain scenarios. Don’t assume today’s instant-withdrawal behavior is a fixed, unchangeable feature going forward.

Pro-rata processing means you’re exposed to every sub-vault’s current state, not just the ones you’d choose. If one sub-vault is in an unusually stressed position at the moment you withdraw, that affects your pro-rata share of the withdrawal regardless of how other sub-vaults are performing.

A large withdrawal relative to the vault’s total size may experience more slippage than a small one. As with liquidity withdrawal from any pooled structure, size matters, a withdrawal that’s a small fraction of MegaVault’s total TVL is less likely to meaningfully affect execution than one that represents a significant share of the vault.

See it for yourself

If you’re planning a significant withdrawal, check MegaVault’s current TVL and consider whether your withdrawal represents a meaningful share of it, a smaller relative withdrawal is less likely to experience notable slippage. Frequently asked questions

Is there a lockup period before I can withdraw from MegaVault?

No, in the current version, deposits and withdrawals are both processed without a fixed lockup period, though dYdX has noted this could change in future iterations.

Will I always receive exactly the USDC value my shares are worth?

Not necessarily, withdrawals can experience slippage depending on market conditions and the vault’s current positioning at the time you withdraw.

Can I choose which sub-vault my withdrawal comes from?

No, withdrawals are processed pro-rata across all of MegaVault’s current sub-vault allocations, not selectively from any single one.

Could MegaVault introduce withdrawal restrictions in the future?

Possibly, dYdX has stated that future versions could introduce lockup periods or other restrictions in certain scenarios, so treat the current instant-withdrawal behavior as the present system rather than a permanent guarantee.

Risk warning

Trading crypto assets, and leveraged products based on them such as perpetual futures ("perps"), is high risk. A large share of retail traders lose money on these products. Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike and can push your loss beyond the amount you put in. Positions can be closed automatically (liquidation) before you get a chance to react, and some of the platforms we cover offer no negative balance protection.
